The modular construction manager is going to be a critical component of your construction project. They are going to look after the entire project and ensure that it gets delivered on time, within the budget constraints, and as conceptualized in the blueprint.
Every construction project is unique, and not every construction manager will suit your project’s needs. Hiring a bad construction manager can be disastrous, and the right one needs to be hired for your project. You can do so by interviewing them; here are some of the questions you should ask.
1) How Many Years of Experience Do You Have?
This question is especially important for more complex construction projects. Regardless of their educational background, hands-on experience is always valuable. The more experience they have in working with projects similar to yours, the better.
Ask if they have any experience working as a senior-level manager for any projects or organizations before. You should also ask them if they have any degrees or certifications in a specific field of construction or construction management, that is always a plus.
2) What is Your Strategy In Case the Project Does Not Run as Planned?
During a construction project, things can go wrong. The project may overshoot the budget, on-site accidents may happen that can push the finishing date further, or a worker might not show up. Your construction manager needs to know what to do in such situations, handle them, and bring the project back on track.
3) Have You Ever Let Go of a Project? Why?
They may have let go of a project for several reasons; perhaps the project was not right, they disagreed with the project owner, or due to a family emergency. Ask them this. If they have, they should have a justifiable reason for it. You can then decide whether or not to hire them based on their answer.
4) What Makes You Different from Your Competitors?
Every construction manager is unique; they have their strengths and weaknesses. So, ask them this question to know if their strengths suit your project needs, and that their shortcomings are not substantial enough to hamper the project.
5) What Kind of Communication Should I Expect?
When it comes to construction, communication is the key. Bad projects manager fail at that. Thus, you need to hire a project manager who knows how to communicate with you effectively and efficiently, without delays so that you can work through the situation at ease.
If the prospective modular construction manager avoids any of these questions, it is a major red flag, and you should move on to someone else. Hiring a bad, or even a mediocre project manager, is not worth the risk.
